The Grate Steak opened its doors for business on Military Highway in Norfolk, Virginia in 1984. We began as a ‘cook your own’ steak house with an all-you-can-eat 20 item salad bar and baked potato topping bar. This was a new concept in quality dining because it was everything you wanted in a ‘great steak’ dinner. Premium USDA Choice beef, piping hot baked potatoes, and unlimited trips to our salad bar gave our guests an affordable, unique and fun dining experience in a casual
atmosphere.

Twenty-five years later we have survived in an industry where ninety-five percent go out of business within five years. We still serve outstanding, award winning steaks. The salad bar has expanded to over forty items. The menu has expanded but fifty percent of our guests choose to cook their own steaks. They experience a fun, interesting, interactive, and delicious alternative to ordinary restaurants.
